If I am coming for a blood test referred by an outside doctor, do I need to book?
You do not need to book ahead if you are coming in for a blood test.
On arrival please just let our support team know and they will make you comfortable until the collection team are ready for you.
If you or your child has problems giving blood and would like a numbing agent applied, they will need to see one of our doctors prior to the sample collection so please allow the time for this.
-
My child has had horrible experiences getting blood taken. What can be done to make this less stressful?
We understand and we've got you.
Giving blood is not the greatest experience but the team do everything they can to make this as pain-free (and stress-free) as possible including:
- having a specially trained paediatric pathology team on-site.
- the option of numbing creams (you will need to see the doctor prior to the test for this).
- using VR headsets and the Buzzy Bee vibrating cool pack to distract the child.
-
What are common diseases or conditions in kids detected by pathology?
Pathology is the testing of samples of blood, urine, and other body tissue/fluid. Pathology can help detect many common childhood illnesses including viral and bacterial infections, blood disorders like anaemia, kidney, liver, endocrine, genetic disorders and more.
With a simple Respiratory swab, we can detect specific respiratory infections like RSV, Parainfluenza, Pertussis (Whooping Cough, Influenza A and B, Covid 19, Adenovirus, etc.
Blood and urine tests can be used in conjunction with a thorough history and examination from a Doctor to diagnose a variety of infections and conditions.
-
Can I go to any pathology centre?
Most pathology labs can do most tests, but some more specialised tests may need specific labs or appointments.
-
How long does it take for blood test results at Western Diagnostics?
This largely depends on the test ordered, some take a day, some can take several days. Your specially trained paediatric collection team can provide an indication.
-
Do I need a referral to attend a pathology collection centre?
Yes, a request form from the GP with requested tests is required. The collection team do not order the tests. Kids blood tests in Perth require a referral in the same way adults do.
-
Do you have to go to a specific pathology centre?
This depends on the requested test ordered.
-
What diseases cannot be detected?
Every patient is different, so it is not that simple. Your GP will gain a relevant history, interpret examination findings, then move to pathology testing if necessary.
Once put together, this contributes to making a diagnosis. If your family does not have a local GP, Kinkaya’s GP is taking new patients.
